How to Choose Five Writing Samples for AI Editing

Choose writing you are permitted to use that reflects your intended genre and tone. Five samples provide a practical worksheet, not a validated minimum or proof of identity.

Published 15 October 2026 · By VEYTHARA by ETHARA™, developed by Ethara Global Technologies Inc.

Method: the examples below were created for this guide. They illustrate editing choices and are not outputs from a measured product test or findings about a real writer.

Choose samples by purpose, not just length

Start with the next document: who will read it, what should they understand and how formal should it feel? A research explanation, customer email and personal essay can all be yours while sounding different. Select examples that show the voice you want here.

For a project update, choose recent updates or clear professional emails. If mixing genres, explain which traits to borrow: warmth from a reflection, for example, and terminology from a report.

Make a five-sample selection table

One relevant sample may suit a narrow task better than five unrelated documents. This fictional worksheet shows selection choices; sample quality has not been measured.

Slot and permissionGenre / audienceTraits to keepTraits to avoid
1 · My own updateProject teamDirect opening; clear next stepInternal names
2 · My own emailExternal customerWarm phrasing; plain wordsPrivate account details
3 · My own explanationGeneral readerConcrete examplesTopic-specific jargon
4 · My own reflectionPublic audienceSentence length variationPersonal facts irrelevant here
5 · My own edited draftSame audience as new draftTerminology I deliberately retainedChanges I no longer prefer

Add source labels, permissions and demonstrated traits. Leave unused slots empty; keep extract locations in your private notes.

Remove private and third-party material before upload

Read the extract before sending it. Remove identifiers, confidential business details, account numbers and comments about other people that the editing task does not need. Being able to access a document does not by itself give you permission to share it with an AI service.

Before: “Hi Mira, account 884621 needs its renewal moved to 18 October. Please call 604-555-0148.”
Prepared sample: “Hi [recipient], [account] needs its renewal moved to [date]. Please contact me.”

This fictional redaction retains the greeting and direct request; it does not establish safe anonymization of a real document. Choose another extract if redaction destroys useful context. Inspect pasted or imported text before submission.

Describe observable preferences

“Sound like me” leaves many choices unstated. Describe the patterns you can point to: contractions, plain vocabulary, occasional short sentences, first-person statements, restrained transitions or preferred technical terms. Identify a phrase that demonstrates each preference rather than assigning an unvalidated similarity percentage.

Style preference cardYour instruction
Audience and purpose[Who will read this? What should they understand?]
Keep[For example: contractions, direct requests, varied sentence length.]
Change[For example: agreement errors and unclear references.]
Ask before changing[For example: uncertainty, attribution or specialist terms.]
Avoid[For example: sales language or invented conclusions.]

A useful instruction is: “Use these samples for wording and rhythm. Keep the draft’s facts and qualifications. Correct grammar, and flag anything you cannot resolve from the draft.” The samples guide an editing request; they should not become a source for new factual claims.

Test the profile on a new paragraph

Keep the original and inspect the style profile’s cited excerpts. Does “concise” remove necessary context? Does “confident” replace deliberate uncertainty? Check the revision against your actual intention.

Illustrative original: “I think the schedule might work. Let’s check with the team first.”
Suggested rewrite: “The schedule works; we can proceed.”
Reviewer decision: reject. The suggestion removes both the uncertainty and the step of asking the team. Write “The schedule might work. Let’s check with the team first” if you prefer a tighter opening.

Record the mismatch. Replace samples with a different audience, outdated tone or unwanted editing. More samples cannot replace review. For smaller corrections, see how to fix grammar while keeping your voice.

Try one edit and inspect the result

VEYTHARA offers grammar, clarity and Match my voice modes. Grammar can start with the draft alone. Voice mode uses one to five writing samples you are permitted to use; you can paste samples or use the file picker for supported documents. The AI suggests a revision and a sample-based style profile. Read the cited sample excerpts and challenge any preference it inferred incorrectly.

The free writing test needs no sign-in or card. It allows one successful revision per browser trial, within 750 words and 6,000 characters. Its trial cookie lasts 30 days from the first writing-test visit; daily pilot capacity is limited. Adding samples does not grant additional free revisions.

With your explicit consent, your draft, selected samples and preferences are sent to OpenAI. Test text and results are not saved as account records; provider retention rules apply. Read the privacy notice and download the result before leaving. Signing in to create a saved review case is a separate step.

What sample guidance can show

A style profile can misinterpret samples. It cannot prove identity or authorship, or guarantee unchanged meaning. Review the final words yourself. Use the draft comparison workspace to inspect changes and keep review decisions; return to all writing review guides for related worksheets.
